distressed_dove: Self-Injury Awareness Day

I don't know how many of you have heard about this, but it is very important: March 1st is International Self-Injury Awareness Day. That means SPREAD THE WORD. Misconceptions about self-injury in society are rampant. People need to be educated, especially authority figures. This means police, teachers, parents, medical workers, employers, and anyone else who can affect you in situations regarding SI.

There are a few things you can do to raise awareness.

1. Pamphlets. This is a very good way to reach people. You can put them up at school, work, in hospitals, police stations, supermarkets, libraries...the list goes on. It can really help.

2. Presentations. Organizing a forum where you can reach people face to face is a great idea. You can hold them for students, for parents, for medical workers, policement, local employers, general public...anything you like. I realize that probably no one will do something like this, but it's something to think about. It's a much more effective way of reaching people.

3. Contact your mayor, governor, MP (for Canadians), etc. Ask them to get involved. They can do things like wear ribbons (red and black), help with leaflets, etc. It's important to get community leaders involved.

4. Contact newspapers. Do a few letters to the editor, maybe write a research piece or an 'expose' so to speak. You can ask to remain anonymous, obviously, so privacy shouldn't be an issue. And hell, if you're really brave, get someone to do an interview with you.

5. Spread the word online. Send out messages on the major sites (LJ and MySpace, for instance). Go to communities, send PMs to random people, write articles, blog entries...anything. After all, communication is one of the main reasons for the internet's existence.

This is a chance for the issue to get a little bit of understanding, to shed a little light on it. Right now, this is a completely grassroots movement. Governments are not getting involved, and they need to be doing so. The only way that will happen is if March 1st becomes KNOWN to the world. And it's up to us to make sure that happens.

You don't have to do much. A pamphlet here, a ribbon there...it doesn't have to be a big campaign. But PLEASE, if you feel strongly about this issue, get involved somehow.

This will be x-posted to pretty much every SI community I can get my hands on.

Hello. I'm Stephanie, 16, not from the US. I don't want to give too much away, as I only made up this username to protect my friends. I don't want to make this too long, so I'll just give you some background information:
  • I started cutting when I was about 12 or 13. I had to take time out of class to see the school Welfare Officer. Shortly after that, school finished for the Summer and I didn't go back (I had to go to see a psychologist at the hospital. She said I was fine.)
  • I "stopped" after that. In actual fact, I never did- just found new ways to keep it a secret.
  • I have thought about suicide many, many, many times. It's constantly on my mind. I would never do it, though. My brother killed himself when I was a baby and I would never put my mother through it again.
  • I have tremendously supportive friends and therefore don't cut as often any more. Although the last time I cut myself was last September, I hurt myself quite often.
  • I prefer to use a razor when I do cut, but most other times, I use my hands. I hit myself (specifically on the head) or hit walls with either my head or my fists. I also have quite long nails, which I dig into the back(s?) of my hands. I did that last Tuesday in school. It didn't bleed that much, just leaked some plasma.
  • I cut because it makes things better. I'm not naive, I know it doesn't take away my problems, it doesn't decrease my workload. It does, however, help me to teal with them. I've always been sort of fascinated by my own blood, so it also has quite a calming effect on me. I want to be a nurse and the fact that I have to busy myself with cleaning the wound(s) and working to remove evidence also calms me down and makes me feel more in control.
  • Last of all, nobody knows I still do it. I think a few people have an inkling but I'm evasive and tend to slyly change the subject or skirt my way around the issue. I will not put the people I love through unnecessary pain.
Sorry that it was so long!

    broken_kael: Sorry.......

I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel, I focus on the pain, the only thing that's real, the razor tears a hole, the old familiar sting, try to slash it all away, but I remember everything. Today is the day of my re-birth, I'm active again and I don't regret it, bringing it all back gave me shivers. I know this community isn't exactly pro-cut, but this is how I feel. My cuts are relatively small but still the blood flows free, I don't see myself stopping anytime soon, if it were up to me I would never leave my room and sit on my bed with a razor. I have to clean up now, I have a very early morning ahead of me.
